Actors from The Wizard of Oz

Two of the actors from the recent performance of The Wizard of Oz came to speak to the Year 3/4 children. We were fortunate to have the actor that played the lead role of Dorothy, as well as The Good Witch. The children enjoyed finding out about their experience and had plenty of good questions to ask.

Some of the interesting things we found out were:
  • They didn't have a script and during the first week of rehearsals the actors had to work out what they were going to say.
  • As they didn't have a script to follow the actors could just make it up if they made a mistake or thought of something better to say.
  • When they started planning the performance they looked at the different skills or abilities the actors had and tried to incorporate them into the performance. Dorothy was a good tap dancer, so instead of tapping her shoes to go home at the end of the performance she did a tap dance.
  • Dorothy didn't wear the same pair of silver shoes for the whole performance as she needed some pieces of metal on the soles for the tap dance, but they would have made too much noise during the rest of the performance.
  • To make the witch look tall the actor who played the wizard hid under the witch's cloak and carried her on his shoulders. When Dorothy poured the water over the witch and she had to look like she was melting the wizard lowered himself down and then disappeared through a hole in the stage and then the witch disappeared through the hole just leaving her cloak behind, which was held up by some wire.

Writing

Room 15 have been doing descriptive writing, focusing on adding interesting adjectives as well as including other language features such as similes and alliteration. Today we shared our character descriptions of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz with Room 16, who gave us feedback on which words or features helped to add detail to our writing.
Dorothy is a loving, friendly teenage girl, who lives in Kansas, which is in America. She has a black small dog called Toto, she goes everywhere with Toto. She lives with her very busy Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Dorothy lives on a farm - it definitely isn’t a modern farm, but it is rather old!

Dorothy is a tall lean girl. She has beautiful hazel brown eyes, as well as pale skin. Dorothy has pretty ruby red lips like strawberries. She also has bronze hair that she likes to wear in plaits, with aqua blue bows at the top. She wears a sky blue and a marshmallow white checkered dress and underneath her dress she has a white puffed up sleeve top. Dorothy has a loud squeaky voice that could break a wall of glass. She has the Wicked Witch of the East’s blood shot red sparkly shoes with a little heel, as well as a middle sized bow the same colour as her shoes.

Dorothy is a very kind-hearted teenage girl. She lives on a rusty old farm in Kansa with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, the farm workers and her dog Toto.

Dorothy has brown thick hair, which is so long. She has pale skin. Her eyes are as brown as mud. She has a perfect nose – not round and not pointy. Her lips are as red as strawberries.

Dorothy is a kind and caring girl who is always nice to people, except people who try to hurt Toto and her friends. Dorothy is very polite because she invited the scarecrow to join her. She is very helpful because she helped Toto not to fall out of the house when they were in a tornado.
