Eco House

Room 15 visited Kairu's house to find out what an eco house is and how houses can be built to be energy efficient and 'kind' on the environment. Below are some of the things that the children found interesting.

Arabella - the kitchen bench top was made out of recycled paper and each layer was made up of 100 sheets.

Harry - they used a tree that had fallen down on the West Coast to make the timbers for the outside walls.

Matthew - the pipes take all the 'grey' water to 2 filter tanks so that it can be cleaned and reused.

Georgia - water from the sink drained into the toilet system so that it could be reused when you flush the toilet.

Annabel - the fancy light shades were made out of recycled cardboard.

We also found it really interesting to see how Kairu's family used an app to monitor how much power they were generating using their solar panels on the roof. On the day we went it was very cloudy and they still generated some of their own power, but had to top up their power from the power company. When Kairu's dad turned on the kettle we could see straight away that they were using more power from the power company.
